SCiDEV publishes a study on legal and policy framework on food security

The Center Science and Innovation for Development (SCiDEV) is implementing the project “Improving food security through improved legal framework and dialogue”, funded through a sub-grant of the project “ideAL – Dialogue for inclusive evidence-based policy development in Albania“, with the financial support of the European Union. The project will be implemented in partnership with the Albanian Food Industry (AFI).

In this context, SCIDEV has published a study on the legal and policy frameworks on food security in Albania. This study defines the regulatory framework and related mechanisms for food security in the country. Food Security is a cyclical, complicated, lengthy, and just as important process that affects and is transmitted through the entire terrestrial ecosystem. As such it is a difficult and complex undertaking to assess this topic, and especially for what this security means for human health but also for living things. Current legislation, which still needs to be developed, even more, testifies to the processes and diversity of actions and standards that must be met to ensure food security.

The scope of the project is to impact the improvement of food safety in Albania through the analysis, policy evaluation, improvement of the legal framework, advocacy, and awareness-raising of producers and consumers. This scope will be achieved through the evaluation of the current situation of food safety by analyzing the legal and normative framework, policies, and main decision-making actors that implement food safety, as well as by identifying challenges and shortcomings.

ide-AL is implemented by Co-PLAN, the Institute for Habitat Development in cooperation with the European Policy Center (Brussels) and with the financial support of the IPA Civil Society Facility and Media Programme 2018 – 2019 of the European Union. It aims to contribute to the improvement of the public policy dialogue in Albania, by strengthening the policy dialogue in the reform process and facilitating engagement and dialogue between central and local state institutions and non-state actors. ideAL envisages working closely with state and non-state actors in support of dialogue between the parties, creating a capacity development platform to support non-state actors in policy-related areas, and financially supporting through one substantial grant program, non-state actors engaged in policy research. It is funded by IPA Civil Society Facility and Media Programme 2018 – 2019.
