Digital Literacies Need Assessment Report in U2SID Partner Universities

SCiDEV as a partner in the U2SID project, which aims to advance inclusive digital transformation in higher education in Albania and Montenegro, assessed the digital literacies of lecturers and students in four partner universities, namely: University of Shkodra “Luigj Gurakuqi”, University of Korça “Fan S. Noli”, Mediterranean University of Albania, and University of Montenegro. Through online questionnaires and focus groups with lecturer and students, this assessment identifies the gaps in digital literacies that hinder the effective use of digital tools and resources in teaching and learning environments in the universities involved in this project in Albania and Montenegro. In addition, focus groups with stakeholders were organized to gather their input in regarding digital literacies needs, expectations and the potential barriers to implementing digital literacies programme. The online survey, serving as the primary quantitative instrument, successfully captured data from a cohort comprising 705 students and 199 lecturers in 4 partner universities. Participants self-reported their proficiency in digital literacies, their routine utilization of digital resources, their preferences for specific technological tools, and their articulated needs for additional support and training. Complementarily, the qualitative dimension of the study was realized through structured 12 focus groups with a total of 146 participants, including lecturers, students, and university stakeholders. This report will inform with evidence the next activities to be implemented by the project partners such as the Digital Literacies Accelerator Programme and Digital Transformation Challenge. From the analysis in this report it is evident that universities need a comprehensive and extensive intervention when it comes to digital literacies. Poor digital literacies at the university level affects teaching and learning significantly, while also affecting the employability and job retention of students in the future. For universities to be competitive, innovative and digital savvy, a series of recommendations are drawn and can be found in the full report.
